We're Back! Welcome to the 2026-27 School Year
Welcome (or welcome back) to Highland View Academy! We’re so glad to see our returning students, and we’re doing our best to get our new friends familiar with life here on campus. We're so excited to start the 2026-2027 school year, and to take you along with us throughout all of the exciting things happening here!
I’m Joju, and I’m writing these blogs so that you all know what life is like at HVA. I’m a junior now, and I’m a little nervous about the new year, but I’m ready to face whatever comes. I’m in Highlanders (choir) and Handbells, so I’m excited for the music performances we’ll have later on in the year. But enough about me, let’s jump into the first events of the year.
Before the first day of classes, we had Registration Day which turned the building into a loud, lively place when we reunited with old friends and met new friends. Personally, I was overjoyed to see my close friends again. There were, of course, new students having a bit of trouble with lockers and getting lost in the halls, but our returning students helped guide them. The freshmen are slightly nervous, since this is a different environment and a big step up from middle school, so we’re counting on our upperclassmen to take them under their wing!
Our first day of school was a full day of activities that helped us get to know each other. We started with Handshake, where we line up, shake hands, and introduce ourselves to the entire student body and staff. That was a quick way to make a new friend, but our Student Association took it a step further and organized the shoe game, ultimate frisbee, and silent games where we had to use signs and gestures to communicate. I had a lot of fun figuring out who was born in the same month as me and going back and forth for a game called “Would You Rather”. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather have hiccups all day than wear wet socks.
The first week of school was full of orientation meetings to help us figure out how we should go about our campus life. They were tiring, but had valuable information. I laughed a lot during Mrs. Lutz’s dress code segment that included an amazing runway fashion show. Lunch is now earlier in the day, which is awesome because I’m always hungry at that time. The cafe looks super sleek and modern now that it got repainted and retiled. We also get treats on Wednesdays, like a pick-me-up during the middle of the week. One of those treats is singing “Welcome Table” during Prayer and Praise time. In this song, each class sings a different verse. It was fun for all of us to have a new verse to sing this year, and the freshman seem to be catching on quickly. When I was a Freshman, our class was so quiet while singing, but now, the current Freshmen are so loud during their part! There was some confusion with what words you’re supposed to say, but we’ll get the hang of it.
Our Student Association was so thoughtful and planned an S.A. Fun Day for us at Pine Furnace State Park on Thursday, August 27! We got to relax under the trees, talk with friends, swim in the lake, and so much more. I don’t swim, but I had a wonderful time reading books, painting my nails, and hanging out with my friends. All you could hear was the sound of students having a good time together.
On Saturday, August 29, we had our first Highlanders performance at Highland View Church. It’s hard to believe this group of singers has only been together a few days. We all felt so comfortable together, and our friends at HVC were so supportive and happy to have us there.
Today we start our first Week of Prayer (August 31-September 5 at 7:30 pm at HVC). The speaker, Daniel Jeon, is a Bible teacher and writer who will be sharing with us how we can properly understand the Bible and how we can find our purpose in life. I already know his words will be inspirational and will touch many hearts, so I encourage you to come!
